On March 17, I was talking with the headmistress of a kindergarten about several problems with stay-at- home children, mother education, junk food and nonsense games children had. I assigned several task to the headmistress. 1. To promote Chinese Culture Education from the beginning of reading Di Zi Gui. 2. To encourage parents to join the parent meeting instead of grandparents. 3. To advocate family reading activity. At the moment, the headmistress was worried that children were too young to understand ancient Chinese prose, so parents and leaders wouldn’t support it. Based on my experience, I showed her concrete methods and expected to see results. To my surprise, in just one month, my guidance brought amazing effects. Nearly 200 children had recited most paragraphs of Di Zi Gui; all the children could dance san zi jing chopsticks; and 38 mothers had applied to join the “Happy Mum Reading Club” I was going to establish. The headmistress was very excited. Many education leaders learned about it and they supported and promoted all the activities I carried out here. On Children’s Day, I wanted to hold two activities—Mother Education Lecture and All reading Di Zi Gui. Mothers’ quality, children education and townspeople civilization will change a lot in less a year. My cautious plans were carried successfully out and I believe we have a bright future. Mr. Zhao and partners of Transparent Fish, I will bring good news to all of you. I believe I am worthy of your trust.

Tony Yang is getting beaten to a pulp. He's not wanted by mobsters nor is he another Cybercrime bully. The former University of California doctoral student (c/o '09) just says that's what it feels like each quarter when he wraps up an adjunct teaching gig and goes home without a permanent job offer. Photo: Chronicle of Higher Education "It can be very tough on the pysche," he told the Chronicle of Higher Education. "The darkest moment had to be when I finished my dissertation. I turned it in and there (was) no job ... So when I graduated, the first thing I had to do was file for unemployment." As a kid, his family supplemented their income with food stamps. Decades later, he found himself in the same position, applying for welfare to get by when his doctoral degree wasn't enough to bring home a steady paycheck. [Related: Is A College Degree Worth It?] After the recession took hold in 2007, the rate of PhD holders who've filed for government assistance more than tripled to 33,655 by 2010, according to data collected by Austin Nichols, a senior researcher with the Chronicle's Urban Institute. Other graduates of continuing education weren't far behind. Of the nation's 22 million master's degree holders, nearly 360,000 applied for food stamps by 2010 – also triple the rate before the recession. And it's not just an anemic job market that's stunted graduate students' personal economies. They're chipping away at record-breaking student debt loads, while many rely on temporary teaching stints that often don't last longer than a semester. "Others are trying to raise families or pay for their children's college expenses on the low and fluctuating pay they receive as professors off the tenure track, a group that now makes up 70 percent of faculties," the Chronicle's Stacy Patton writes. "Many bounce on and off unemployment or welfare during semester breaks. And some adjuncts have found themselves trying to make ends meet by waiting tables or bagging groceries alongside their students." Like Yang, who holds a PhD in History from the University of California, many graduates are delaying marriage until they can afford the walk down the aisle. [Related: Nine Dangerous Things You Were Taught In School] "That's terribly frustrating, because your life is on hold until the economy picks up," he said. "If I have to get psychologically beaten up every quarter, I'm just not gonna care at some point. And there are many who don't care." As it stands, today's twenty-somethings are toting around an average of $45,000 in debt, which PNC Financial Services estimates will nearly double to $80,000 by the time they hit their thirties. Ginger Dean, founder of personal finance blog Girls Just Wanna Have Funds, was on track to get her PhD in psychology. Then she took a look at the $120,000 price sticker, did a little math and decided against it. "While I was accepted to a few programs, shelling out $80-$120k in extra student loans for a $5k annual difference in pay wasn’t worth it for me," she said. "I also had to consider the years I would spend in school (4-7) and the lost opportunity for full time income during that time as well as the harsh reality that the increase in salary and total amount paid in student loans isn’t worth the “prestige” of having a doctorate." Yang knows the feeling. "The joke is, yeah you have prestige," Yang said. "But you can't eat prestige."

People with leprosy are sent to isolated places without families or friends to support them emotionally of physically. They are abandoned and forgotten by society. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry has a heart for these people and organizes groups of volunteers to travel to leprosy villages and provide medical, living, and psychological assistance. The following article is a group of volunteers providing medicine for anabrosis patients. It was a lucky April for the leprosy patients, especially for those who had anabrosis—with the help of an American college student and an old nurse Nancy, 5 boxes of medicine were taken to KunMing from the USA. Anabrosis is a disease that not only causes pain, infection, and fever, but is extremely detrimental to their life and health. These leprosy patients that also had anabrosis desperately hoped for a kind of medicine that would cure their aching disease. With the help of volunteers, the Shalom team was able to send medicine to Zhushan and Yangjuangou in Yiliang on April 15th. They even changed the medicine for 9 patients. After instructing the patients on how to properly use the medicine, the team left the patients a week's worth of medicine. On April 21st, there was fantastic news from patients. Their anabrosis had become much better and their nagging pain gradually disappeared. Granulation tissue began to grow in the wounds. The next day, Nancy and other volunteers went to Aziying of Kunming. There, they applied MEDIHONEY and provided new socks for patients. On April 23rd, Timmy, a teacher from Texas of the USA, and the Shalom team fetched water from the mountain six times in order to prepare clean drinking water for the patients. Two days later, Nancy, Liang Ping, and other volunteers visited patients again. This time, they focused on the patients’ recovery and gave them more guidance on how to use the medicine. Shalom and the recovered patients gave many thanks to Nancy, Dimay, and the other volunteers, and especially thanked the USA company that provided them the free medicine. At the same time, we also appreciated Kunming volunteers’ participation and coorperation. The following is an article about the volunteer's experience in ZhuShan. On April 23, an American teacher, Timmy, students, and Shalom Liang Ping visited four recovery patients in Zhushan. They helped by cutting firewood and cleaning houses. Since the recovery patients had to use extremely turbid water, the volunteers helped find clean drinking water for patients. This murky water often led to serious health problems that would hurt the patients even more. The previous three year drought in the Yunnan Province made the majority of the water source dried up. Thus, water supply was very minimal, and the water in the poor areas became turbid. Due to their handicap, it was very difficult for them to fetch clean water from far away. Led by Lao Li, these volunteers would gather buckets to fetch water. Though the journey to the water source was tough, they still went back and forth six times and brought back 50 buckets of water that the patients would be able to use for ten days. We were not only able to provide them with medicine, but we also bought to them clean drinking water which the poor townspeople have been thirsting for for so long. We also reported this water problem to the local government and hoped that they would actually do something about it. (Recently, we received the news that the Yiliang Health Bureau had allocated funds and sent professionals to the area to solve the problem. This problem will be solved within the following week!)

Little Red Scarf Care serves to provide financial means and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide the family with post-operative care and help their child sustain a healthy lifestyle. The following shares articulates a story about A ying and her transformation from a reserved child to a bubbly, joyful girl post-operation. Read the original article here. Each child has something he or she likes, but what each likes is different. So are their natures, which are different from the day they were born. Today I want to introduce a little girl to all of you. Her name is A ying. She is 3 and very shy. Every time we see her in hospital, she is shy. Before the operation, her parents asked whether or not she was scared. She thought for a while and shook her head. She was too young to know what fear was. A ying stayed in the ICU for 7 days after the operation, which made the introverted girl even more reticent. Although she accepted psychological counseling before the operation, A ying’s parents still felt worried about her. They told stories and encouraged her every day, but she was still gloomy. She seemed so scared, especially when she saw doctors and nurses. All of us worried about her. Our volunteers took food to her and were stationed to see her. We caused her curiosity and praised her. Then A ying’s attention began to shift. Her big eyes stared at the schoolbag we brought to her. To our surprise, she chuckled when she held the bag. We all relaxed and felt hopeful about A ying’s psychological recovery. Her mother told us she was not happy for a long time. The day after her operation was her happiest day. A ying danced, filling us with pleasure at the lovely sight. Her parents were so pleased and thanked us ceaselessly. We were happier than her parents. Love Program helps children overcome mental block and come out of dread from operations. We are so glad to share our story with you! Little Red Scarf Care serves to provide financial means and encouragement to children suffering from congenital heart disease. In addition, they provide the family with post-operative care and help their child sustain a healthy lifestyle. The following article is a story about a family that receives aid from LRS. We first met Star in March. He was 14, and was outstanding with other younger brothers and sisters of The Little Red Scarf. Star was seriously ill. Their parents did not know the truth that Star had complicated congenital heart disease until May last year. They thought Star had a long-term cold due to malnutrition and weak constitution. They might have never found out that star had a serious illness, but Star couldn’t go to school because of the severe illness. But at that time, they only had 3000 RMB, which was too small a sum for the expensive expense of an operation. It was a tough time for Star’s parents when he had an operation and was in the ICU. Star was the only child in his family. Every time his parents saw him suffering in the ICU, his father would cry and his mother fainted several times. Star’s father always mentioned The Little Red Scarf when talking with wardmates. Since the first day in hospital, staff from The Little Red Scarf often came to see them and made them feel warm in the strange city. He knew that they were not lonely in the strange city because The Little Red Scarf was always with them. The staff of The Little Red Scarf sent all the details and guidance by text to Star’s parents so that they could take better care of him. They could check the information at any time. The Little Red Scarf’s staff was so considerate. The most considerate gifts were stationary and nutrition after operations. They needed lots of nutrition after operations. It was never occurred to you that all the children loved those love heart school bags. Even those children before kindergarten wanted them. Star got his love heart school bag for he was strong and sensible after the operation. Star’s father often said, ”Thank you to The Little Red Scarf for the support , I really appreciate what you did for us, thank you for standing by us.” Because of the special care in hospitals our staff had the same nickname: “Aunt Xiao Hong Jin”. Though I was not as old as they called me, I accepted the glorious address with pleasure. Lepers are sent to isolated places without families or friends to support them emotionally of physically. They are abandoned and forgotten by society. The Shalom Leprosy Compassion Ministry has a heart for these people and organizes groups of volunteers to fundraise and travel to them and provide them with medical, living, and psychological assistance. Appreciation
It is so exciting that Shalom Love Leprosy Service has been promoted as a Strategic Partner. It is not only a glory but a responsibility for the Shalom team. Our goals include how to better portray our image in the process of serving leprosy patients, how to offer effective help, and how to be open, transparent, normative, and efficient during the work of Shalom Love Leprosy Service. I hope the work of the Shalom team can get the positive affirmation of Transparent Fish Fund and more friends. We are thankful for Transparent Fish Fund’s trust and help.
The Good News of the Recovered Patients Appreciation On April 15, Ping Liang and volunteers changed a medical prescription of the US- Medihoney for five patients who had serious ulcers in Zhushan and Yangjuangou of Yiliang. On April 23, Liang Ping and volunteers returned the five patients to their village. They offered drinking water to the patients, and meanwhile they focused on examining the condition of the patients.
The results excited everyone. The five anabrosis patients were smelly and sore, and sometimes they had fever before using the U.S. medicine. But now the feeling of severe pain was relieved. The pain disappeared by the fifth day and they never had fever. The ulcer area had shrunk and some wounds had grown new granulation tissue. The recovered patients who took the medicine were positive of the effect of the medicine and hoped we could continue to offer help until their ulcer was completely cured.
Due to the restriction of drug sources, we can only help those patients in Zhushan, Yangjuangou, and Aziying in Kunming. We are going to offer help in hope that their wounds can be completely cured. -- Written by: Ping Liang Translated by: Shishi Ma Edited by Intern Emily Cheng Original Article Emily Cheng

[Light of Love is a student organization dedicated to improving health and education for underprivileged populations in China. For more information about them, please visit here.] In April, 26 new members joined Light of Love, which brought new blood to us. The team became larger and larger, including the 9 principal members that joined the team last year. In order to help members know each other well and enhance the cohesion of our team, we held a training themed “ice-breaking trip”. The training began with interactive games. Before the activity, everyone needed to sign up and write his or her name on a sticker. Then they put the sticker on their left arms so others could see. The first game was called “Name Relay.” The member needed to repeat other members’ names before him or her. The purpose of the game was to help members remember each others names and be familiar with each other. Finally with the help of each other, no one was punished. When the last member spoke out all the names of members before her, we all applauded for her excellent memory. The second game was “Emotional Virus.” The game shows that a sad virus was easily infected by happy virus, and it is the same for happiness. Therefore we should have happy hearts and spread happiness to others. The third game was “Hold Dreams for 10 Minutes.” We wrote down a dream on a piece of paper and lifted our arms with the dream paper for 10 minutes. The game helped the members understand that dreams are not just dreams in our mind, we need to fight and persevere for them. What’s more, when you feel tired, you will find you are not the only one on the way to your dream, you have teammates who you can you rely on and share the difficulty with you. The role of teammates is power of friendship. The fourth game was called “stone to make soup.” The purpose of the game helps teammates know the personality and ideas of each other and enhance the communication between the old members and the new ones. Though we played the game many times, we had a different understanding about the game every time we played. Everyone’s idea was different with each other, so when we were listening to others, we learned a lot from them. We need learn from each other, and make progress together. The last game, initiated by brother Chao was “driving blind cars.” One member pretended to be a car and closed his eyes, the other commanded his teammate and made sure that they would not run into other cars. When the game was over, members talked about their feelings and thoughts, which made the game more meaningful. When all the games were over, we wrote down our wishes on the wish wall, which recorded our wishes for ourselves, our team and the children over there. When the training was finished, a warm song named “The Best Future” came on. Though not everyone was familiar with this song, the devout attitude on everyone's faces touched me. Seeing their sincere faces, I believe that Light of Love will have a bright future. Original Article translated by Shishi Ma, edited by intern Kaitlyn Cheung. Kaitlyn Cheung

Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for woman in rural areas. In this article, she writes about her mountain peregrination with a girl she is counseling, and an encounter with a poor shepherd. When doing public service, one must serve with a loving heart. I told this story before: there was this high school girl who had a lot of pressure from studying, as well as a high self-esteem and a bad relationship with her mother which led to her obsessive-compulsive disorder. One of her friends introduced her to a downtown psychiatrist treatment center, and within four months, spent about 30,000 RMB (~4,800 USD). By chance, the director of the women in the town recommended my counseling and she was able to find me. The first time when we met, she told me that she could not go to her school classes, and even at home she felt extremely unhappy, irritated, and anxious because of this situation. So far we have only met 4 times, and after the second time we met, her parents called and happily said: "This time we are on the right path! Our whole family has hope now!" Yesterday was the weekend and the girls asked if she could see me. I told her mother to let her take the bus to come to the hillside to find me. Now is that season where the grass green, flowers are blooming, and I believe that nature would be a much better place than my counseling office. Since we will be going up the mountain, I was a little concerned about the safety issue. So I sent my husband to scout ahead of us and also take pictures for us as well. As we walked down the road, there were rows of pines, fully bloomed apricots, and I talk to her about nature, life, and her future. We found a smooth place to sit down and I asked her take out the homework I gave to her titled “My Dream." I had her read it out loud in front of the mountain and the nature, along with a passionate voice, appropriate language. The way everything fit together and her description of her dream really touched me. It was as if I could see her dream become reality already! How is it that this a girl needs to take medicine? She's fine the way she is! We took a total of about 40 pictures, and on the way back down from the mountain, we came across an old shepherd. What surprised us was that while the sheep were on their own just peacefully eating the grass on the hillside, the elder was just sitting down under the shade and reading a book. Of course I had to ask the shepherd some questions and I intended that the girl would listen! The shepherd is not that old, he's 61 years of age and has only taken a few days of junior high school. At home there were a lot of men, he calls himself "foolish" and their family was poor. No one would really like to talk to him—not even his family. He has been married for four years and has a three year old child. His wife is forty seven years old and was bought through a process of several people form Guang Xi. She was disabled and had no ID card—basically she had nothing. Their family had to rely on the several sheep they owned in order to survive, and could only make about 10,000 RMB every year (~1,600 USD). Despite all of these hardships he has to go through, he loves to read. He enjoys knowing about the government’s things, and also is afraid he would forget all his Chinese is he didn't read. He says, "My books are all bought on the street and at home, there is a pile of them." I told him that the next time I came up to the mountains I would give him books or newspapers. After we walked down from the mountain, I asked the girl a few questions about life, the book, her future. The girl didn't say very much, but as we departed from each other, I asked the girl to write a piece about her feelings and thoughts about today, and she nodded her head saying, "Of course, I can write it right way!" As for the psychotherapist, what role did she play in the end? Were there high counseling fees? Mysteries? Will there be a lot of technology involved? How many people do not understand psychological treatment, and just how many people are actually treated or cured? As for the elderly shepherd, he doesn't even know his own language, behavior, or attitude toward life, and I hope he can find us for counseling as well. On Friday a team of American scientists began a weeklong trek to the base of Mt. Everest where they will remain for at least a month to study the effects of high altitudes on humans. The researchers, from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, will monitor nine climbers at altitude in hopes of gaining insight into human ailments like heart disease. Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for woman in rural areas. She talks about her recent health issues and the work she still has to do. Recently, because of my poor health, I was not able to go to the countryside. And even while I have to do infusion therapy, I also have to prepare my next segment of work. I sit in bed with a computer on my lap, doing a series of courseware and organizing the files of many visitors. These files include mental health knowledge training courseware, children's education, interpersonal communication skills, prenatal care, and early childhood. After I finish, if there is any public service team in need of this, I am completely open for service and can help them! Yesterday afternoon at 2 PM, I went to the Beijing Children’s Hospital to check on Little Shou Hao who was recently supported by Hemophilia Home of China. I only spend about 30 minutes on the road and reached the hospital quickly. I contacted Hemophilia Home of China’s employee Yin Lu, and we went to the ICU where Little Shou Hao was staying. There was a time limit, so Yin Lu went into the room and got some pictures of Little Shou Hao and his mother, and talked discussed his surgery with the doctor. The doctor said he still needed to do the infusion with postoperative care. I heard from the doctor that Little Shou Hao’s mother would come to the hospital gate every early morning and wait for to see her child, no matter whether she was able to see him or not, she would be there all the time, every day the same, and would leave once he had gone to sleep. It really made me feel the mother's love for her own child, it was very touching. After that, I went to visit Little Shou Hao, and he called me “big brother.” His mother told me that before, he could not even speak full sentences and was only be able to say papa or mama, but after the surgery, his speech has been very clear and lucid. It appears that his surgery was successful one! I had simple chat with his mother as well. Those nurses are kept telling me that the time limit was over, (they are quite ferocious, but I understand they are just doing their job), so I took few pictures with Little Shou Hao and his mother, introduced Little Red Scarf and Toumingyu, gave them two masks and informed them about the seriousness of air pollution in Beijing. They seemed very happy. The visit made me feel that the support of the our non-profit was greatly helpful, and feel the greatness of maternal love, and realize there are many more children that need us to care and love! Little Shou Hao's smile left a deep impression on me. Kaitlyn Cheung.

Haizhe is a pretty Hui little girl; her home is in ZhangJiaoChuan Hui autonomous county, Gansu province. Their house is especially remote; getting water requires carrying a bucket of water and goingr three hours over mountain roads. Her mother was still working the day before giving birth to HaiZhe. The birth of HaiZhe brought this remote and poor family a lot of joy. She has always been a clever child; every time her parents had a quarrel, HaiZhe would bring her father and mother's hands together and say: "come on, already had two children, still fighting?" Mom and dad always laugh due to her comments. Mother said that, before the couple would fight, but after her daughter was born they never fought. But as HaiZhe grew up, she got sick more often, and after a cold, doctors found out that she was suffering from congenital heart disease. The news broke the family’s quiet life, and in order treat the illness, her mom and dad began to take turns to work in Xinjiang, because they wanted to leave someone home to take care of the paralyzed grandpa. They are not educated and they can only do heavy physical work to live, with a low salary. Two years ago, the village committee let the family register and said that the civil affairs bureau would sponsor the congenital heart disease children’s surgery. The father quickly applied, but two years later, the civil affairs bureau application still did not reply. Her dad really could not trust it this year, so he brought HaiZhe again for recheck and found that the lacking space in the heart chamber is much bigger. Their doctor told them come to find Little Red Scarf, and after they were introduced to each other, her dad said: "I wanted to wait for the children civil affairs relief of the disease before, but the child’s condition is getting worse and worse. If Little Red Scarf can give us a hand, then I have made up my mind for the operation." The day before the operation, Haizhe holds her mother's neck and said: "Mom, don't worry. Your health is not good and you should not worry at all. I’ll be all good after the surgery." During the three hour operation time, her mom fainted two times. She often thought of the child’s comforting words for her, but she is afraid of losing this lovely little angel. Her mom and dad are in the hospital taking care HaiZhe, and at home, the 12 year old brother has to take care the grandfather in bed. Every night in the hospital, her the dad had to sleep on the floor, he said: "To hire a bed each night costs 20 yuan, this 20 yuan is enough for the three people’s meals.” They survived these 10 days with much calculations, when HaiZhe was about to discharged from the hospital, the whole family was really happy. HaiZhe said: "thank you to the Little Red Scarf uncles and aunts who gave me this healthy heart. We welcome them to come to our home to visit." How lovely the angel is. Just by looking at her, her parents feel happy no matter how tired they are! Translated by Ma Shishi 翻译:透明鱼马时实 Edited by Intern Isabel Auyeung 编辑:美国东村族实习生 Isabel Auyeung

When Nanzhuang was in the hospital, his grandma and grandpa spent a lot of time taking care of him. Today I went to see little Na Zhuang. He was put on a drip, and his arms and hands will feel some pain afterwards. After seeing his grandma gently rubbing his little left arm and small hands, and his grandpa washing the right hand on the right side, seeing two people with graying hair care for his so much, I asked him: "Nanzhuang, do you like grandpa better or grandma?" Nanzhuang turned back to look at them and said, “Neither.” This little spoiled one who doesn’t know how to speak the right words. Grandma heard this and deliberately said, “If you don’t like us, we will leave, and you will have to stay in the hospital alone.” Nanzhuang noticed that his grandma might really mean it, and immediately said, "I like grandma." His grandpa then cut in,"Then I will go, you don't like me anyways." Nanzhuang worried and said: "I like grandpa." What an adorable child. He thought that he could only pick one between his grandparents, not both! Original Article translated by Shishi Ma, edited by intern Kaitlyn Cheung. Kaitlyn Cheung

JianHui is a very lovely, social child at the young age of ten months. Six days after he was born, he was run down by a cold and continuously cried while his face and lips turned blue. As the crying became more faint, his family grew nervous and quickly took JianHui to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. However, his family refused to believe the doctor and ignored the problem until JianHui was about eight months old and suffered a shock from a cold and fever. The family panicked and took him to the provincial women and children’s hospital in Lanzhou, where he was, once again, diagnosed with congenital heart disease. His family finally, though unreluctantly, believed the results and asked God why this suffering was placed upon them. JianHui’s mother blamed herself for the cruel disease imposed on her first child. During the night, his mother would wake up during her dreams with a start. This newly discovered disease in her family, along with their already-present poverty, would surely make her inferior in the village, and she feared the sneers and judgment her family would receive. After the Spring Festival, the healthy JianHui suffered another shock, and his mother took him to Lanzhou for another check, where they learned that his ventricular sepal defect had grown to be about 10 mm in size. To improve his long-term health, the doctor suggested surgical treatment, to which the family agreed because they could not rely on a doctor being present every time JianHui is in need of care. However, the high cost of the operation -- thirty thousand yuan -- worried them tremendously; when they got married, the husband and wife already obtained a debt of thirty thousand yuan, all of which still had not been repaid, making it nearly impossible for them to receive a loan again. Looking at the couple whose eyes were filled with tears, the doctor recommended them to Little Red Scarf, where, after filling out an application, JianHui’s parents received the endowment funds. This instilled them with a sense of hope and encouraged them that Little Red Scarf would give them the ability to repay their debts and allow their son to recover soon. Afterwards, the mother carried JianHui again, and she was filled with joy as she truly believed he could recover immediately. The postoperative rehabilitation has been very successful; JianHui only needed 13 days from his admission to discharge, and the little one is loved by all. His mother can finally rest her mind peacefully, and her heart was changed silently. Ally Nguyen

Coming out of the ShuangLiu airport, it was raining really hard, yet I still had to run to the train station to buy a ticket to NanChong. Somehow, I managed to purchase a ticket, however there were no seats remaining for her on the train. I was slightly frustrated, and didn't wish to eat anything at noon. And since I had luggage on me, it was inconvenient to go outside, so I just found an empty chair indoors and started reading. Just as I sat down, a mother and daughter came by; the daughter looked about 50 years old, and the mother was about 80, and the two had a lot of luggage. She sat down next to me and made the initiative to talk. I knew she was with her mother and took her to visit their working daughter. Right as she found out who I was, she desperately grasped my hand and spoke to me in tears saying, "Ms. Zhou, please save my son!" Her son was 14 years old, and had Internet addiction. She and her daughter tried to tie him up and discipline him, but it didn't work. Now, he doesn't even go to school; he locked himself up in his room and jumped the window to run away. He didn't come home for a couple days, and the mother tried asking his teacher for help, but the teacher said she didn't care. She begged her daughter to not beat her little brother, yet she too didn't listen to her mother's cry, and now the mother is in despair! She said her son used to be a very good child, he studied pretty hard, was very understanding, and would even pick up an empty bottle on the street to sell for money to help reduce the burden at home. A couple years ago, her husband suddenly passed away, and she was forced to work in the city, and her son and his 90 year old grandma remained at home. Her son said that many times people didn't care for him at all, and the mother didn't realize it until the problem really got worse. What am I supposed to say? There's a lot of children like these—parents without culture and having to work outside—and these little children don't have anyone to talk to and feel isolated from the older generation. They feel lonely, empty, destitute, and look to the outside world for happiness, only to find themselves becoming addicted to the Internet. I tore two pieces of paper from my notebook–on one I wrote what she should do when she gets back; on the other I wrote to her daughter to tell her not to ever beat her brother and to cooperate with her mother to correctly treat her brother. I also left with them my cell phone number and QQ number as well. She took out her own ID card, and I recorded her name and home address, and promised that if I had the chance, I would visit them. When it was time to check the train tickets, she insisted that I go to the 6 compartment with her so I could sit with them. I originally was in carriage 4, so I had to refuse. She took my bags and got on the train and had me sit in her seat. She stood besides me and began introducing me to everyone that was around us, as if everyone knew who I was. I felt really embarrassed and the mother kept talking about her son and her home. The conductor was very kind, and found us a seat in carriage 5. That place was very beautiful—it faced the car window, flowers were blossoming just as beautifully as a painting—and I immediately felt peace and forgot about my fatigue. Unexpectedly, she came over in a couple minutes and sat next to me to continue talking about the same topic. We almost arrived to NanChong and because of her company, I was not lonely. She carried my luggages and sent me off, telling me over and over, "Come to my house! I'll cook you the best meals ever!" Just like this, I met a visitor and began a relationship.

I had planned activities for this festival over a month ago. I single-handedly looked for five contestants, and theme was "What kind of woman is the most beautiful?" It was what my lecture would be about. The first contestant was a village kindergarten teacher, and she was very talented. She gave her speech "The Most Beautiful, Happy Woman". The second contestant was a woman's director of a village, and among the five contestants, she was the only one that I didn't change a word in her contest paper because I was afraid I might damage the kind of simple beauty. She said, "Women who are very sentimental are the most beautiful women; a fourth generation women is the most beautiful woman; women working in the fields are the most beautiful women, and having the courage to stand on the stage, like me, are also the most beautiful women!" The third contestant was a girl working in a factor. Her speech was entitled "Labors of Women are the Most Beautiful". The fourth contestant was a determined, young mother who wished to own a home business. She titled her speech "I Want to be a Beautiful Angle". The fifth contestant was a retired cadre, and I found him on the street. Because he was a man, a lot of people questioned his appearance on stage, however, I had my own plan and let him speak on stage. Turns out, he had a lot of fun with this activity, and one of his topics was "The Sunset Woman is the Most Beautiful Woman". He also took two questions and answered them exquisitely. One questions was "Between mental health and physical health, which one do you think is more important to have?" He answered, "Both are important! A week mental health will lead to physical ailments, and families have to suffer to pay the medical bills. The other question was "Who was the most beautiful woman you have ever seen? It can be woman in your life, TV, books, but you need to tell us why." He said, "Of all the women I have seen in my 60 years of existence, Ms. Zhou is the most beautiful woman of them all! Even though she is retired, she still comes to provide with counseling. She is knowledgable, caring, enthusiastic, beautiful, and this is why I believe she is the most beautiful woman!" His answer brewed lots of laughter and applause from the audience. After the event was over, I gave myself and evaluation; the overall feeling is that as long as the participants will get love, happiness, inspiration, it makes it all worth it in the end. Some of the guests attending said, "This activity has had a tremendous impact on the local women, and its effects cannot be estimated!" The organizers of the event said, "As long as it's Ms. Zhou's class, no matter how many people attend, they will all end up following her footsteps."

China rescued more than 24,000 abducted children and women last year. Some of these victims were sold for adoption or while others were forced into prostitution as far away as Angola. The Ministry of Public Security said that another 77 children were saved in a bust on a cross-province human trafficking network last week.
According to the Irish TImes, the ministry told the annual parliament, the National People’s Congress, that the police rescued a total of 8,660 abducted children and 15,458 women in busts of 3,195 human trafficking gangs during 2011.
Agence France-Presse also notes that the trafficking of boy children is a particularly serious problem in China — and is blamed in part on the strict "one-child" policy. Couples unable to conceive a son, or male heir, can simply just obtain one.
Global Times, a state-run newspaper, interviewed Chen Qingwei, a police officer who helped crack down an infant trafficking case in Shandong, and he said that couples who sold their babies were mainly from poverty-stricken areas.
"A boy could fetch a price as high as 50,000 yuan ($7,905)," Chen reportedly said, "with the price for girls at about 30,000 yuan ($4,743). This is far more than what parents could make by farming the land." (CNN)
Girls, in the meantime, were sold to foreign adoptive parents as "orphans," CNN reported, according to the Southern Metropolis News.
Times also wrote that several Vietnamese gangs were also smuggling children from Vietnam into China.
AFP reported that the public security ministry said that they had cracked nearly 3,200 trafficking gangs last year, including a ring that sent Chinese women to Angola to work as prostitutes.
"In November 2011, the public security ministry dispatched a police team to Angola... and detained 16 suspects and freed 19 Chinese women." according to AFP.
Girls and women also are abducted and used as laborers or as brides for unwed sons (Irish Times).
On the bright side, Times also writes that the ministry had cited its work in helping reunite children with their families using new technology, such as a DNA database and a Weibo microblog account.
The ministry also vowed sterner crackdowns against trafficking, says the Xinhua News Agency.

On the morning of New Year’s Day, the Cooperative’s venues slowly brought together many local villagers. It is always this exciting every New Year’s Day, and this year was no exception. With the voice of the host announcing the start of activities, the crackling sound of the firecrackers starts to rise to welcome the New Year. Immediately the activities began. The first activity is ZaShaBao (toss the sandbags). Each person has three sandbags and on their turn, stands outside a line 6 meters away from the bottles and tries to hit the bottles using the sandbags. Each successful hit is rewarded with a lollipop. Due to the simplicity of this game, people of all ages participated, and almost everyone won a lollipop. The warm-up game of tossing the sandbags was immediately followed by games like Taoquan (a game involving ferrules), Kangaroo Jump, and Three-Legged Races. The games are interpersed with performances: Yueliangzhishang (a Chinese song meaning “On the Moons”); HuangMei Opera; and songs such as “Loving Each Other,” “Come Back Home to See,” etc. In short, Spring Festival celebrations in the Cooperatives are lively. People spent their Spring Festival surrounded by much laughter. We will continue to spend the Spring Festival with the people, and do our best to bring joy to everyone! -- Original Story by Yang YunBiao 作者:杨云标 Translated by Shishi Ma 翻译:透明鱼工作人员 马时实 Edited by Emily Cheng 编辑: 美国东村族实习生 Emily Cheng

Ms. Zhou focuses on mental and psychological counseling for woman in the rural areas. In this article, she talks about her experience giving a lecture at QianXi Teachers' Education. Even though I was very stressed because of all the things I had to deal with, I agreed anyway to join QianXi Teachers’ Education. This is my first experience training teachers who are actually the teachers of other local teachers. There was a total of 50 people. Some of the prerequisites for this Education Training were "mental health knowledge and interpersonal communication skills". The course definitely pressed me on time, because I already had a lot to prepare for the Nanjing lectures and the activities on March 8th in Nanchang city. I spoke for a total of two hours. Two hours which I practically did not get to walk around. Two hours where 50 eyes were always glued on me. Two hours where I wasn’t even allowed a couple minutes of rest. After the meeting concluded, some of the leaders offered some inspirational feedback, “This lecture will be a milestone for QianXi education history; it is of great significance and of great impact to our QianXi education!" One of the principals said, "This is just the knowledge that we want—the details, truths, principles, and individual stories were able to be deeply understood. It quenched our thirst!" Trade union chairman said, "If you look into the future, this education will ultimately bring you a job, reward you with a happy live, and a chance to be seen as a role model for all the teachers of this county." A male teacher said, "From now on, I will help my wife with some household chores, and never again will I have to care about those little, trivial things..." It seems like this lecture blessed me with a lot of work. The Bureau leaders also said that they would work to further promote mental health education, and they hope to schedule appointments to have some deep discussions with me. Although they weren’t able to help me with financial aid, but the dinner was excellent. Thirteen different leaders ate with me! I know I can’t control too much; I only know how to lecture, and I’m going to do what I should do, that’s it. [The following article is about a new lunch program in rural schools administered by Light of Love, an organization dedicated to rural health and education. For more information, please see http://www.tfishfund.org/light-of-love.html. The article consists of a series of updates on the implementation of a new lunch program at a given school district] Winter break went by very quickly. March 1, the school district where Light of Love works had its first school day. Throughout the holiday, the Light of Love team’s helped putting a smile on many underprivileged students. This year, there are 55 children whose lunch is provide by the Transparent Fish Fund. When the school started, the staff told this good news to the children, whose faces were full of joy and happiness. They no longer had to eat cold food, potatoes, and rice dipped in spicy sauce every day. The school district assigned paper work for the lunch program in addition to preparation for the beginning of the semester. Although the teachers were kept very busy, seeing the children’s happiness it made each one of them as well as the Light of Love staffers very happy. Being caught off guard lunch Yesterday the funds had not arrived yet, but volunteers and staffers at Light of Love still wanted to get the kids to eat the first "love lunch." After cooking for the kids, they realized that there are many more students than before. Because of the short notice, the teachers and staffers decided to let the kids eat first. The staff had a lot of fun just seeing how much the kids enjoyed the food. Then all the teachers ate noodles. Yesterday, there were also a lot of parents. They were quite happy. The Light of Love community feels grateful for everyone’s help. Changing the Way Students Eat at School Due to an increase in the number of students eating at school this semester, it becomes necessary to make some changes. If the program continued our original setup (in which every table is set up beforehand) of lunch, it will take a long time (due to rural school funds limited, it is not possible to ask more of workers for students service). Sometimes the early dishes would get cold before the students arrive. Students are waiting too long. Our dining room too narrow. To deal with this problem, staff and volunteers purchased more plates and utensils. After school, students will line up to get their food by class number, and teacher will help them get the lunch. Today is the first day this new practice has been installed. The children are very polite; no one cut in line; there was no bickering between them. Anhui Farmers' Cooperative is an organization for farmers' rights, and has undertaken several community development projects. We had a cooperative meeting. We had delayed the 2011 cooperative meeting because we had a lot of work at the end of the year. Before the meeting started, everyone got together and sang the choral song “Red East,” which created a festive atmosphere. This was soon followed by the host’s artillery sound, announcing the start of the meeting. Soon after, Yang Yun Biao, who is in charge of the agriculture cooperative society, gave a speech, and then the wine shop people and the members also made a report. At the very end, the principal (actually a retired principal, who now works with the agriculture cooperative society, but everyone still calls him the principal) announced the bonus plan. This year's bonus money is coming with the purchase of the agricultural resources. Members buy two quarters of agricultural per share dividend (30 RMB), members purchase season agricultural resources of the per share dividend (15 RMB), who did not buy the agricultural resources of the 7 yuan per share, according to the bank 3% per annum 5 to dividends. At the same time, we also opened our “loving heart” inventory room, so that each community’s number can pick his or her own clothes, five per person. These clothes are needed as welfare sent to the members. The clothes are inexpensive because we do not have much money, but the members are still very happy about it. Watching them walk down the stairs with their faces full of joy and happiness, I felt really happy. The image is very warm. The smiles we brought to them - if this is not joy, than what is it?

Everything takes time. The problem is that people give up when they don't see the result instantly.
